Nobel Prize Nominee Asserts Terri Can Be Rehabilitated

[UPDATE: Al Franken on Scarb. 3/23/05 has ruled out the claim that Dr. Hammesfahr is a "Nobel prize nominee". There appears to be no such thing. What the doctor had was a letter of recommendation from Rep. Mike Bilirakis. Have not had a chance to look into this.]

"How can this possibly be the case, given that she has PVS?"

Simple. 1: She doesn't have PVS. 2: She didn't have a heart attack. 3: Brain scan shows 75% of her brain tissue intact. 4: All stories to the contrary are myths - this doctor spent 10 hours with Terri.

Can this possibly be true? Tell me I'm dreaming. Would anyone who can falsify this data please step forward? The name is Dr. William Hammesfahr.

Well, the other side will try to pin him as a right-wing hack, as all of the other people who know what they are talking about.

Never mind the wonderful Dr. Cranford's dubious conflicts-of-interest in the right-to-die movement, and yes, you read his classic piece justifying the starvation of Alzheimer's patients on the internet (just google "Cranford" and "When a feeding tube borders on the barbaric").

Nobody made it up.

You continue to rock and roll, thanks for adding me to your blogroll. I am truly honored to be added by a person of conviction and action who can see what is happening and has been happening for years now...

Media Matters for America has taken this doctor to task, but of course it hasn't yet looked at the dubious background of Dr. Ronald Cranford, the star doctor for Michael Schiavo's side.

This case isn't worth making political hay out of--by both sides.

75 of her brain is left. That means 25 percent of her brain is gone. This *might* be OK if it was simply every fourth cell that was gone, but that is simply not the case. A large amount of the part that was the cerebral cortex, the part needed for thought, memory, and so on, is soup. It is now "cerebro-spinal fluid". There is no reversing that.

This doctor, Hammersfahr is an interesting one. The fact that I can read his website and already know what he will think about the case makes me wonder about his impartiality. "God Leaves No One Behind" is the motto on the site, in big letters. This is *fine*, and no, him being religious is not an issue unto itself. I just wonder how he comes to the opposite conclusion of his peers, and I suspect ideology as opposed to sound medical science. Those in favor of keeping her alive at all costs on the religious right are ignoring the numerous other doctors that took a look at her and came to a different conclusion, and paying attention to this one doctor sent by the parents, not to mention ignoring the law.

Look at my blog for some parallels to past cases as well.

Read Dr. Cranford's writings, the man who says she's PVS, and see if he's objective.

He's not.

Erik - The debate is pointless. Either he will be allowed to treat the patient or he won't. You realize the only way you are "guaranteed" to be "right" is if she doesn't have her feeding tube reinstated, she dies because of it, and her remains before the Pinellas County M.E. can do the autopsy.

But realize also this is false comfort. Once the incentive to keep the affidavits of Terri's nurses out of the public eye is lifted, any competent doctor will admit she could not have had PVS. This and the sealed medical records will incriminate Michael (like it should have already) and the inference chain of George Felos will unwind.

I predict that when that happens, your side will encourage a meaningless debate of, "well, maybe she didn't exactly have PVS, but clearly she wasn't doing so hot, was she?" Is it really such a big deal to have easer her along when her quality of life was obviously so poor?"

It's a meaningless debate because Michael is the one that put her in that poor quality-of-life state, and did not have the right to approve starvation against her wishes. Your principled stand will stand for nothing more than an excuse for criminal behavior (of the kind you & I both agree is criminal) under the guise of faux "dignity".

I'm beginning to suspect that to some, this isn't about "PVS" anyhow but about hoping we set a precedent of society's indifference to the details of an injured patient's diagnosis. That would make it easier for "legitimate" right-to-die cases from being approved, but we will have done it by letting a troika commit conspiracy to murder and evasion of malpractice.

It helps no one but the Scott Petersons of the world if this nonsense is allowed to continue. The next wife-abuser won't as dumb as Scott. He'll take after Michael instead.

RD,

bravo to your comments to the latest dodo who has come a trolling.

No matter how I have looked at this case, I cannot understand how it is that there are still people who believe Dr. Death Cranford.

If there was ever a case of suspicion about doctor motivation, it has to be the motivation of Cranford in giving the diagnosis that cousel wants so that a person will be condemned to death.

It seems that the Cranford supporter are now attempting to Dr. Hammesfahr, despite the fact that he spent a lot longer than any other of the doctors who have made a fateful decision on Terri Schindler-Schiavo.

Well, what these latest little trolls do not recognize that there are far more neurologists, and medical doctors who are lining up behind Hammesfahr on this case, than the ones who agree with the diagnosis of Crandon.

The most substantial rebuttal of Cranford's diagnosis remains the fact that we have a possible brain scan hoax. This is elevated by the fact that Schiavo and Felos have refused further testing for Terri so that once and for all it can be seen the real state of her brain.

Considering what has emerged over the past few days about Terri's alertness, I cannot accept the prognosis that she was beyond rehabilitation>

Where does that leave me? Wanting to know why, a few months after the compensation money had been received, that Michael Schiavo refused to allow his wife any form of treatment or therapy.

Being aware of the fact that people use subterfuge to hide their own guilt, the outbursts of Michael Schiavo before he was silenced for his faux pas, have been an attempt to deflect attention away from the real issues.

There are a lot of special investigators checking into this case, and I am hopeful that it will not be long before Michael Schiavo is arrested because of his criminal behaviour. The death mafia will not win this case in the end.
